1. Strawberry Fields Memorial

The Strawberry Fields Memorial is one of the most emotional and symbolic sites in Central Park. It was erected as a memorial in honor of John Lennon, the legendary Beatles singer who was tragically murdered in the immediate vicinity of the park, in front of the Dakota Building, on December 8, 1980.

The touching Imagine mosaic at Strawberry Fields Memorial, accompanied by a busker playing John Lennon’s songs – a peaceful and inspiring place in Central Park.

The memorial, which was dedicated in 1985, is located directly opposite the Dakota Building, where Lennon spent the last years of his life. His wife, Yoko Ono, who still lives in the area today, was personally keen to design this place as a peaceful memorial.

Named after the famous Beatles song “Strawberry Fields Forever”, the memorial symbolizes the peace and message of love that Lennon stood for throughout his life. The centerpiece of the memorial is the world-famous “Imagine” mosaic, which is embedded in the floor. The mosaic, a gift from the city of Naples, is made of gray and white marble stones and bears the simple but powerful inscription “Imagine”, in reference to Lennon’s song of the same name, which became an anthem of peace.

Many visitors take photos at the “Imagine” mosaic in the Strawberry Fields Memorial

Strawberry Fields is not only a tribute to John Lennon, but also an international “Garden of Peace” designed in collaboration with 121 countries around the world. These countries donated plants and trees that were planted around the memorial. The site is deliberately designed as a peaceful retreat where visitors from all over the world can gather to lay flowers, light candles or simply enjoy a moment of silence. Street musicians often gather here to play Lennon’s songs, creating a special, almost meditative atmosphere.

Every December 8, on the anniversary of his death, hundreds of people flock to this place to commemorate John Lennon and sing together. Likewise, October 9, Lennon’s birthday, is regularly celebrated, with fans honoring his message of peace and unity.

Our tip: Sit on one of the surrounding benches, some of which have personal inscriptions on them, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Let the music and the meaning of the place sink in. It is a wonderful place to pause and remember the power of music and peace.

2. Bethesda Fountain and Bethesda Terrace – Majestic beauty

The Bethesda Fountain with the famous “Angel of the Waters” statue is one of the most iconic landmarks in Central Park.

We enjoy the quiet moment at Bethesda Fountain in Central Park, while boats glide across the lake in the background

The impressive statue is symbolic of hope and healing, as it was built in 1873 as a tribute to the Croton Aqueduct, which brought clean drinking water to New York. Surrounded by the magnificent Bethesda Terrace, which consists of a lower and upper level, you have a wonderful view of Central Park Lake from here.

From here you can see boats on the lake and often enjoy very good street musicians who create a relaxed atmosphere.

3. Loeb Boathouse

At the Loeb Boathouse, you can hire rowing boats and explore Central Park from the water. The peaceful setting of the lake, surrounded by trees and the Manhattan skyline, is simply magical. Incidentally, the Boathouse has been featured in numerous films, including When Harry Met Sally.

5. Turtle Pond and Belvedere Castle – Fantastic view from the tower

Turtle Pond is one of the quietest and most idyllic places in Central Park, a little paradise for nature lovers and those seeking relaxation. The pond owes its name to the numerous turtles that frolic here, swimming leisurely in the water or basking in the sun on the rocks.

The biodiversity in and around the pond is amazing – from fish and birds to the turtles that make this picturesque spot a favorite stop for park visitors. The pond is in close proximity to the Great Lawn and the Delacorte Theater, where the famous “Shakespeare in the Park” performances take place in the summer.

Turtle Pond itself is a relatively recent addition to Central Park. It wasn’t until the 1980s that this area, previously known as Belvedere Lake, was transformed into an ecologically balanced pond. Today, the pond offers a peaceful setting that is perfect for relaxing and watching the wildlife. Turtle Pond is a true paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers – especially in the morning hours and during sunset, the place exudes an unparalleled tranquillity.

Belvedere Castle in Central Park

Towering over the pond is the fairytale Belvedere Castle, a small castle that seems to come from another time. Designed in 1872 by park architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the castle originally served as a lookout point and weather station, as it is located at one of the highest points in the park. The name “Belvedere” comes from the Italian and means “beautiful view” – and that is exactly what the castle offers in abundance.

At Belvedere Castle
From Belvedere Castle you have one of the best panoramic views of Central Park. Turtle Pond lies directly below and the skyscrapers of Manhattan loom on the horizon

From the battlements of the castle, you have a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire Central Park and the impressive Manhattan skyline. The view stretches in all directions: To the south, you can look across the green expanse of the park to the skyscrapers of Midtown, while to the north you can enjoy the view of the dense forest of The Ramble. The view is particularly spectacular in autumn, when the trees glow in vibrant colors, or at sunset, when the light makes the buildings of Manhattan glow in warm tones.

Today, Belvedere Castle is home to a weather station and a visitor center where you can learn more about the flora and fauna of the park. For families with children, there are interactive exhibitions and programs that provide information about the park’s wildlife. A special highlight is the access to the castle’s towers, which offer a unique vantage point.
