My film about the Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood.
Welcome to a hair-raising adventure that will freeze the blood in even the bravest of souls! In this film, I’m taking you on an unforgettable journey through the Halloween Horror Nights 2023 at Universal Studios Hollywood. Buckle up, gather your ‘Scream Squad,’ and prepare yourself for a night full of terror, excitement, and of course, tons of fun. You think you know Halloween? Then you haven’t experienced Halloween Horror Nights yet!
1. Scare Zones – the Zones of Terror

The perfect start for our exploration tour through the Halloween Horror Nights is, of course, the Scare Zones. Trust me, you don’t just pass through these areas, you experience an immersive horror experience of the highest caliber.

The Scare Zones are scattered throughout the park and transform ordinary paths into frightening courses. Universal goes all out with incredible sets, special effects, and of course, scare actors.

These performers are trained professionals who know exactly how to give you a proper scare while staying in character. And not to forget, the makeup and costumes are simply movie-quality.
2. Haunted Houses – The Ghost Houses

The highlight of the HHN is without a doubt the Haunted Houses. This year, you can expect 8 terrifyingly good houses, many of which are inspired by the biggest names in the horror scene.

You never know what to expect in Universal’s own creations. Trust me, each house here is a masterpiece in its own right, and you’ll have fun in every single one.

In the film (see above), I show you walk-throughs of three of my favorite Haunted Houses at Universal Studios Hollywood: Holidayz In Hell, Stranger Things 4, and Universal Monsters: Unmasked.

I just love the classics. But trust me, all the Haunted Houses are great and you’ll have fun in every single one. So let’s go through the best Haunted Houses of this year together.
Holidays In Hell – Hellish Holidays
Ah, brave souls, I welcome you! The first horror I’d like to reveal to you is called “Holidayz In Hell.”

Imagine your favorite holidays, from New Year’s Eve to Christmas, turning into nightmares of the most dreadful kind. This place of horror takes the phrase ‘It’s the season’ to a whole new and terrifying level.

In this house, your formerly joyful celebrations are literally turned into hell. And that’s what makes this horror so special. It blends the nostalgia of the holidays with the heart-pounding terror. As they say here: The more terrible, the merrier.
In Holidayz In Hell
Stranger Things 4 – The ultimate showdown

Next up is an absolute highlight, namely “Stranger Things 4.” This is not just another Haunted House; this is the ultimate showdown in Vecna’s blood-red Mind Lair. If you thought the series was intense, wait until you’ve had this experience.

You’ll need your crew more than ever to resist Vecna’s dreadful curse. Just like Eleven, you now have the chance to put an end to him once and for all.

Face the scariest season of Stranger Things yet and find out if you have what it takes to defeat the evil. Don’t forget: Every end has a beginning, and in this house, the end of your nerves might be closer than you think.

Universal Monsters: Unmasked

Brave souls, step closer! I’ll lead you down into the catacombs of “Universal Monsters: Unmasked.” Legendary horrors await you there: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Phantom of the Opera, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, and the Invisible Man.

These monsters, each a symbol of horror in their own right, have united in a single nightmare. They form the heart of a house that honors both the classics and modern terrors.

A place where past and present blend in the darkness. Do you dare to experience this horror? Take the step, but be warned: It will be an encounter you won’t forget anytime soon.
3. The Purge – Dangerous Waters

We’re venturing into uncharted waters with “The Purge: Dangerous Waters!” This brand-new live entertainment experience brings the horror of the Purge franchise into a completely new setting – the open waters.

It’s been a decade since The Purge first unleashed chaos by making all crimes legal for 12 nerve-wracking hours. Now imagine the thrill as the franchise evolves in an entirely new live show. The stakes are high as a politician and his crew desperately flee to an island to escape the Purge. But guess what? The island quickly becomes overrun with Purgers, and the hunt begins!

The whole thing takes place in the iconic WaterWorld venue. Prepare yourselves for a sensory spectacle, with adrenaline-filled action sequences, daring stunts, and spectacular light and laser effects that will leave you speechless. Time is ticking, so get ready for a breathtaking adventure that you won’t forget anytime soon!
4. Meet the Death Eaters in Hogsmeade

As the sun sinks below the horizon and the night embraces the village, an ominous fog descends upon Hogsmeade – announcing the arrival of Voldemort’s most loyal servants: the Death Eaters.

Universal Studios Hollywood offers you the unique opportunity to encounter these mysterious and dangerous dark wizards face to face. From the imposing shadow of Hogwarts Castle to the enchanting corners of Hogsmeade, the Death Eaters leave their indelible impression of fear and mystique.

You’ll watch the Death Eaters perform dark arts and spells that you’ve only read about in books or seen in movies. As the evening progresses, you might even catch a whisper about future sinister intentions that sends a shiver of fear and anticipation down your spine.

So grab your wands, check your protective spells, and prepare yourselves for a chillingly immersive experience that will stay with you long after you’ve left.
5. Watch the Halloween Slytherin Castle Show

But the dark enchantment doesn’t end here. Get ready for the Dark Arts Castle Show at Hogwarts Castle—a unique spectacle that illuminates the iconic castle in sinister hues and brings malevolent creatures to life through state-of-the-art special effects and projections.
6. Watch the scared people – it’s fun

Don’t underestimate the simple pleasure of watching others get scared at the Halloween Horror Nights. Trust me, it’s a spectacle in itself.

While you catch your breath between the haunted houses, find a good spot and just watch. The facial expressions, the scared jumps, the nervous laughter—it’s pure, unplanned drama and absolutely entertaining.

Whether you’re sipping on a drink or just enjoying a moment of relaxation, you won’t want to miss this genuine theater of emotions. So come for the haunted houses, stay for the laughter, and enjoy the pure thrill of the Halloween Horror Nights.
7. Take some horror selfies

Let’s not forget one of the coolest parts of the Halloween Horror Nights – horror selfies! Because let’s be honest, if you didn’t capture it on camera, did it even happen?

Exactly, between all the screaming and getting scared, don’t forget to whip out your phone and take some spine-chilling selfies to immortalize your terrifying experience. Whether it’s with a horror actor, in front of a haunted house, or just a snapshot of your shocked face—these pictures are not just memories, they’re badges of honor.
8. Meet Megan at Blumhouse Behind the Screams

Prepare yourself for an unforgettable journey into the darker corners of film production with “Blumhouse: Behind the Screams.” This is not your typical behind-the-scenes experience; it’s a nerve-wracking live event, presented by the masters of horror at Blumhouse.

And guess who you’ll meet? Megan, a creepy doll so lifelike that you’ll question your grip on reality. Is she just a prop, or is there something darker behind it?

This is your rare opportunity to delve deep into the twisted minds that create the terror we all love, punctuated by a disturbing encounter with Megan, who you might not easily shake from your nightmares.
Tips for the Halloween Horror Nights
Okay, you’ve survived the houses, dodged the Scare Actors, and maybe even snapped some epic horror selfies. But before you rush off, let’s dial it back a notch and go through some essential tips to optimize your Halloween Horror Nights experience.
1. Familiarize Yourself with the Park Map in Advance
First things first, do your homework! Universal Studios Hollywood provides a comprehensive map to guide you through the labyrinth of terror. Know where you’re going so you can dive right into the action without getting lost. The park gets crowded and dark in the evenings, so knowing your way around will save you time.
2. Shorter Wait Times

Timing is crucial. Weekdays are your friends here, and September is worth its weight in gold—fewer crowds mean shorter wait times and more scares per minute. Even though it’s never empty here, if you can’t handle large crowds, this event might not be for you.

3. Always Buy Tickets in Advance Online

Here comes the crucial point: always buy your tickets in advance online. This event is so popular that it often sells out on the same day. And if not, there are very long queues for ticket purchases. Don’t risk missing the horror fest of your life!

You can get tickets on Universal’s website or you can check out these cheaper discount tickets from good providers.

4. Stay Hydrated

With all the screaming, excitement, and adrenaline rushes, it’s easy to forget to drink. But it can also be quite warm here, even at night. So remember to take breaks and drink plenty of water. The good news is that the park has refill stations where you can get free ice-cold water and ice cubes.

The good news is that there are refill stations in the park where you can get ice-cold water and ice cubes for free.
5. Ticket Options and Stay & Scream Wristbands

For those looking to make the most out of the Halloween Horror Nights, consider buying a regular park admission ticket for the day (that’s what we did) or an “after 2 PM” ticket.

Once you’re in the park, don’t forget to pick up your Stay-and-Scream wristband at Guest Services. This allows you to stay in the park as it transitions to the Halloween event. If you don’t have this wristband, you’ll have to leave the park and re-enter, which can lead to long wait times. Don’t leave this for the evening, as the queues can get very long. We did it around noon and hardly had to wait.
Due to many inquiries from readers, here’s a brief explanation: The day ticket for Universal Studios Hollywood is only valid until the Halloween Horror Nights event starts. This typically happens at 6:30 PM. Then, all park guests who don’t have a Halloween Horror Nights ticket are escorted out of the park. This means that without the Halloween Horror Nights ticket, you won’t be able to access any rides, attractions, or the Lower Lot.
Outside the entrance, you’ll see many visitors who didn’t have a day ticket and only have a Halloween Horror Nights ticket. They are only allowed in at the beginning of the event, which gives you the advantage of being able to join a queue ahead of these visitors inside the park.
6. Do You Need the Express Pass?

Let’s address the zombie in the room: If you plan on experiencing all the haunted houses, an Express Pass is almost a must-have. This is an additional ticket that grants you access to faster entrances for the haunted houses and shows.
The wait times for newer and more popular houses can range from 80 to 120 minutes, making it nearly impossible to visit all eight houses after 6 PM and still have fun.

7. Have Fun on the Rides

But let’s not forget the rides that await you alongside the haunted houses. As you navigate through the scares, you can also elevate your adrenaline levels with some of Universal Studios Hollywood’s most iconic attractions.
Get wet on Jurassic World-The Ride, feel the heat on Revenge of the Mummy, transform your experience with TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D, and dive into magical worlds with Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

8. Leave the Kids at Home
This thrilling event is recommended for brave souls aged 13 and up. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. In 2019, we even had the pleasure of meeting an incredibly brave Ghostbuster who was young but fearless enough to explore the haunted houses based on their favorite movie.
You know your kids better than anyone, so use your best judgment when deciding if they’re ready for this spooky experience. If they’re fans of horror movies and can handle scares, the teenage years are generally a suitable time for them to enjoy Halloween Horror Nights.
9. Leave Your Costumes and Masks at Home
It’s important to note that typically, costume masks and full costumes are not allowed at Halloween Horror Nights (although there have been some exceptions, especially for Harry Potter robes). Additionally, no horseplay or items resembling weapons are permitted within the event.
However, there’s an exciting update for Halloween Horror Nights 2023! Universal Studios Hollywood has announced a change in its costume guidelines for specific dates: October 18-22, 25-29, and 31. During these select nights, attendees are allowed to wear costumes, provided they adhere to the park’s new guidelines. This change offers a unique opportunity to get into the spooky spirit of the event while staying within the rules. Be sure to review the guidelines carefully if you plan to dress up on these special nights.
10. Only Bring the Necessities
When preparing for Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood, it’s wise to pack light and bring only the essentials. Here are some tips to help you streamline your belongings:
- ID and Tickets: Ensure you have your identification and event tickets. These are absolutely essential for entry.
- Payment Method: Carry a form of payment, such as a credit card or cash, for food, drinks, and merchandise.
- Mobile Device: Bring your smartphone, as the official Universal app can be incredibly helpful for real-time updates on wait times, maps, and event information.
- Comfortable Shoes: Opt for comfortable and sturdy footwear. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, and it’s essential to keep your feet happy.
- Weather-Appropriate Attire: Check the weather forecast and dress accordingly. Los Angeles evenings can get chilly, so consider bringing a light jacket or sweater.
- Small Bag or Backpack: If needed, bring a small bag or backpack to carry your essentials. Ensure it complies with the park’s size restrictions and security policies.
- Phone Charger: A portable phone charger can be a lifesaver, especially if you plan on using your smartphone extensively throughout the night.
- Hydration: Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle. Universal Studios typically offers water refill stations.
By keeping your load light and focusing on the necessities, you’ll have a more enjoyable and hassle-free experience at Halloween Horror Nights. This way, you can fully immerse yourself in the frightful festivities without being weighed down by unnecessary items.
11. Eat Early
It’s a smart strategy to arrive at Halloween Horror Nights with a full stomach if possible. The lines for food can be eerily long, and you don’t want to spend valuable time waiting in them. However, if your appetite does strike during the event, we have a top recommendation for you: check out the Little Cocina food stand located in the Central Plaza.
By eating early or having a hearty meal before you arrive, you can focus more on the spine-tingling experiences and less on standing in line for food. This way, you’ll make the most of your time at Halloween Horror Nights and keep those hunger pangs at bay. Enjoy the frightful fun and the delicious bites when the time is right.
12. Retreat and Regroup: Your Escape Plan at Halloween Horror Nights
If you ever find yourself needing a breather or a temporary escape from the thrills at Halloween Horror Nights, here are some helpful tips:
- Re-Entry: If you decide to leave the park for any reason, inquire about the re-entry policy before you exit. Make sure to take your event ticket with you and be prepared to receive a hand stamp for re-entry.
- Safe Havens: Inside the park, there are places where the monsters dare not tread. Stores, restrooms, and restaurants provide a respite from the scare actors (although please note that some special event dining zones may still have scare actors). So, if you need a moment of calm, these are your sanctuary spots.
- Lower Lot and Springfield U.S.A.: It’s worth mentioning that the Lower Lot generally has no loose scare actors, making it a slightly less intense area to explore. Additionally, Springfield U.S.A. in the Upper Lot typically doesn’t have a scare zone, offering a more relaxed atmosphere for those seeking a break from the scares.
Knowing these escape options can be a valuable part of your Halloween Horror Nights strategy, ensuring you have a memorable and enjoyable time while still keeping your nerves intact.
13. Stay Late and Savor the Horror Atmosphere
The night at Halloween Horror Nights only gets spookier as it unfolds. Resist the urge to rush for the exit; instead, linger and immerse yourself in the chilling and macabre ambiance that intensifies as the evening progresses.
So there you have it—your ultimate guide to mastering the Halloween Horror Nights. Have a blast and see you next time, yours truly, Alex.
